UNEP says breaching 1.5°C is now unavoidable and warming will peak near 1.8°C

UNEP's Limiting Overshoot report (2 September) says warming will cross 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels within a few years. Even if every national climate plan and net zero target is delivered, it will peak at about 1.8°C, and current policies point to about 2.6°C by 2100.

The pathway

  1. Overshoot

    Warming crosses 1.5°C within a few years; slash emissions and protect vulnerable people and ecosystems.

  2. Peak

    Reach at least net zero CO2; every five years of high emissions adds about 0.1°C to the peak.

  3. Decline

    Sustained net negative CO2 emissions bring warming back below 1.5°C by 2100.

  • The UN's first "overshoot, peak, and decline" pathway is not acceptable or preferred, it says, only the best remaining option.

The science

  • The 1.5°C goal refers to warming averaged over decades, so a single year above it does not breach it.
  • Cutting methane, a short-lived climate pollutant, is the most effective way to slow warming in the near term.
  • Carbon dioxide removal is unlikely to reverse more than a few tenths of a degree this century.
  • Returning below 1.5°C will not stop sea level rise or undo extinctions.
  • A longer overshoot raises the risk of tipping points in the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets, the Amazon and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation.

The politics

  • Article 2 of the Paris Agreement holds warming well below 2°C and pursues 1.5°C, goals first set in the Cancun Agreements (COP16, 2010).
  • COP30's Global Mutirão decision (2025) was the first COP text to concede a likely temporary overshoot.
  • UNEP put developing countries' adaptation needs above $310 billion a year by 2035.
  • Adaptation finance, on which the report says little, is expected to divide COP31 in Türkiye in November.
  • India has not joined the Global Methane Pledge, arguing that developed countries owe finance and affordable technology.

Nepal's Bhote Koshi and Trishuli disaster: a glacier and rock collapse that became a cascading debris flow

On 26 August glacier ice and bedrock broke away on Langtang Lirung, near the Nepal Tibet border, and became a debris flow that travelled nearly 100 km down the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli. Nepal counted about 1,340 dead by 7 September.

Why it is not called a GLOF

  • A glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) begins when a lake's natural dam fails, but this began with a slope failure of ice and rock.
  • A debris flow erodes riverbanks and gains mass and momentum downstream, which is why experts called this one a sediment bomb.

How warming loosens slopes

  • Meltwater widens crevasses and, at the glacier bed, can destabilise large blocks of ice.
  • Retreating glaciers strip the snow that cushioned rock walls, leaving rock and ice perched on bare slopes.
  • Thawing permafrost removes the ice that cements rock and sediment together.

Why the warning came late

  • Nepal's warning system issues flood alerts when it detects rain, and this flood did not begin with rain.
  • The site was not on Nepal's list of places at high risk of glacial detachment.
  • The flow's seismic signal was first read as an earthquake, so environmental seismology is proposed as an added layer of warning.

Loss and damage: Nepal seeks climate compensation from major emitters, and India responds

After the 26 August disaster, Nepal's Foreign Minister said China, the United States and India, the major emitters, had a historical responsibility to compensate vulnerable nations like Nepal. Nepal wrote to the UN's Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage. The minister later denied seeking compensation.

India's reply

  • India invoked common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities, with developed countries leading on emissions cuts, finance and technology.
  • Nepal produces about 0.1 per cent of global emissions.
  • India's per capita emissions, around 2 tonnes a year, are about half the global average.

On 3 September the Union Home Secretary reviewed how prepared the Himalayan States and Union Territories are for glacial lake outburst floods and snow avalanches, seeking continuous lake monitoring and risk informed planning.

Warning is not enough

  • In worst case models, a flood triggered by an avalanche in Tibet reaches the Nepal border in about 30 minutes, so warning needs land use zoning and local capacity too.
  • Evacuation on signs of slope instability kept deaths in the 2025 Blatten, Switzerland, avalanche to one, against over 200 in the 2021 Chamoli ice and rock avalanche.

EOS-05 becomes India's first imaging satellite in geosynchronous orbit

ISRO launched EOS-05 on GSLV-F17 on 4 September. It is India's first Earth observation satellite to image from geosynchronous orbit, about 36,000 km up, so it can watch one large region continuously instead of passing over it now and then.

The trade-off

  • A low orbit satellite sees fine detail, but its revisit time runs to days.
  • A geosynchronous satellite gives continuous imaging of a whole region, in coarser detail, and spends fuel on station keeping.
  • Only a satellite in geostationary orbit appears fixed in the sky, while in other geosynchronous orbits it traces a path over the day.

Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026 make traceable IST the legal time reference

The Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026 give time legal status for the first time under the vision of One Nation, One Time. Time dependent systems in government and critical sectors must use a traceable, authorised IST source. The rules take effect 180 days after publication.

How traceable IST reaches a user

  1. Atomic clocks

    CSIR-NPL's clock ensemble and primary frequency standard generate UTC(NPLI).

  2. Link to UTC

    UTC(NPLI) is kept within a few nanoseconds of Coordinated Universal Time.

  3. IST

    Indian Standard Time is UTC(NPLI) plus 5 hours 30 minutes.

  4. Regional copies

    Secondary time scales at five Regional Reference Standard Laboratories, plus NavIC and NIC services.

    Banks, telecom, power grids and government systems synchronise and show traceability.

Who does what

  • CSIR-NPL, India's National Metrology Institute, supplies the scientific basis and traceability.
  • The Legal Metrology Department regulates and enforces, as it already does for shop weights and petrol pump gauges.

Why it matters

  • Many systems took time indirectly from GPS or a telecom provider, sources that can differ by seconds or even minutes.
  • Payments, power grids, telecom and data centres depend on accurate time stamps.
  • SEBI has required stock exchanges since 2013 to synchronise their clocks with atomic clocks.
  • CERT-In guidelines of 2023 recommend that government ICT systems synchronise with NPL and NIC, because tracing a cyber incident needs trustworthy time stamps.
  • GPS is controlled by the United States, and its denial to India during the Kargil War led ISRO to build IRNSS, now NavIC.
  • NavIC's time reference comes from CSIR-NPL.

More than 80 lakh doses have been given under the National HPV Vaccination Campaign, launched in February 2026, which offers 14 year old girls a single free, voluntary dose at government health facilities.

UN General Assembly backs equal-area world maps, naming Equal Earth as the alternative to Mercator

The UN General Assembly adopted Correct the Map, a resolution that is not binding, promoting world maps with continents at their true relative size. It names the 2018 Equal Earth projection as more accurate than the Mercator projection of 1569.
