Artemisinin based combination therapies (ACTs) pair a fast acting artemisinin drug with a partner drug that clears remaining parasites.
- Plasmodium vivax relapses because dormant liver forms, hypnozoites, reactivate; primaquine targets them.
- Partial artemisinin resistance linked to kelch13 mutations has spread in Africa.
- India aims to eliminate malaria by 2030.
What changed
18 Jun 2026BriefThe Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Thiruvananthapuram, reported that parasites inside reticulocytes, which are rich in antioxidants, tolerate artemisinin's oxidative damage far better than those in mature red cells, so it is not a genetic change. India left WHO's High Burden to High Impact group in 2024. - Carbapenems
- Beta-lactam antibiotics held in reserve for serious and resistant infections.
- Gram-negative bacteria
- Bacteria whose thin peptidoglycan wall and outer membrane do not hold the stain.
- Gram-positive bacteria
- Bacteria whose thick peptidoglycan wall holds the stain, with no outer membrane.
- Antimicrobial stewardship
- Hospital practice that decides which antibiotic is used, at what dose and for how long, so that reserve medicines are not spent on infections that do not need them.
