Prelims

The fiscal deficit is the gap between the Centre's total expenditure and its receipts other than borrowing, and so equals its borrowing requirement.

  • The Controller General of Accounts publishes the figures at the end of each month, as a share of the Budget Estimates.
  • The Union Budget of 2026 targets a deficit of 4.3 per cent of GDP for the year, after 4.4 per cent the year before.
  • The Centre's medium term anchor has moved from the yearly deficit to the debt to GDP ratio.
  • Monthly figures swing with lumpy receipts such as the Reserve Bank of India's surplus transfer, credited in May.
