Prelims and Mains

The Group of Seven (G7), of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada, with the European Union attending, has no treaty or permanent secretariat and works through a rotating presidency that decides whom to invite.

  • India has been invited to G7 summits regularly since 2003, as a partner country of the presidency.
  • France invited eight countries to Évian: Brazil, Egypt, India, Kenya, South Korea, Qatar, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates.

What changed

  1. 17 Jun 2026Newnewly added

    • The Prime Minister attended the outreach sessions of the 52nd G7 Summit at Évian-les-Bains, France, held from 15 to 17 June 2026.
    • India argued that mutual trust was the scarcest strategic asset, and pressed for development partnerships between equals and a fair voice for the Global South.
    • The G7 issued statements on global economic imbalances, critical mineral supply chains, artificial intelligence and more air defence for Ukraine and the Middle East.
    • With Canada, in the most substantive meeting, India aims to conclude a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in 2026, and India backed Canada's bid to become a dialogue partner of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).
    • With the United Kingdom India reviewed the India and UK Vision 2035, and with the United Arab Emirates it stressed free navigation through Hormuz.

Mains: India gains more from G7 outreach in bilateral meetings and in shaping agendas such as critical minerals than from summit texts it does not sign, while the G20, where it is a full member, remains its main channel for a Global South agenda.
