A single Ministry of Energy

Coal, petroleum, power, and new and renewable energy each have their own ministry, and nuclear sits outside that structure with the Department of Atomic Energy. All five feed one grid, which takes solar at noon, hydro at the evening peak, nuclear for baseload, coal increasingly for flexibility, and gas turbines, batteries and pumped storage for balancing. An opinion piece argued that the five should be folded into one Ministry of Energy, since each optimises a fuel while nobody optimises the system.
- It would keep specialised departments for each fuel, but set strategy from one place.
- Integrated planning would then run across generation, fuel supply, transmission, storage and demand.
- The United States, Brazil, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom each have a unified energy ministry.

- Hybrid renewable energy project
- A plant that generates from more than one renewable source, usually solar and wind, on one site and through one grid connection.
The Home Ministry has fixed how close to a frontier a renewable plant may stand. Solar, wind and hybrid renewable energy projects are barred within 1 km of the international border, the Line of Control and the Line of Actual Control.
- A project 1 km to 20 km out needs a No Objection Certificate from the Defence Ministry.
- Any project within 50 km needs Home Ministry security clearance.
- Staff from Pakistan, Bangladesh or China, and any land transfer to a foreign firm, need approval.

India's non fossil build has run ahead of its own timetable, so the question has stopped being how much can be generated. It has become whether the wires can move that power and the batteries can hold it until it is wanted.
- Non fossil capacity has crossed 300 GW, and renewables reached a record 20 per cent of generation in July 2026.
- About 283 GW of renewables are installed against a target of 500 GW by 2030.

- Renewable capacity was 288.58 GW on 30 June 2026: solar 162.15 GW, wind 57.44 GW, hydro 57.24 GW and bio power 11.75 GW. With 8.78 GW of nuclear, non fossil capacity was 297.36 GW.
Curtailment

- Curtailment
- Deliberately cutting a plant's output below what it could generate, because the grid cannot carry or absorb the electricity.
- Power purchase agreement
- A long term contract under which a buyer, usually a distribution company, agrees to take a project's electricity at an agreed price.
Solar and wind generate when the weather allows rather than when demand asks, and Indian demand peaks after sunset while the panels work at midday. Where neither the wires nor the load can take the power, the cheapest answer is to switch some of it off, and the loss falls on the generator.
- 8,133 million units of solar generation were cut in the first half of 2026, with peaks of 8.6 GW in western India and 5.6 GW in the north.
- Capacity connected on temporary network access is curtailed first, and those projects are losing 30 to 50 per cent of their output.
- New renewable auctions have slowed sharply, and 40 to 45 GW of awarded capacity has no signed power purchase agreement.
- Moving demand into solar hours, through industrial electrification, workplace charging and time of day tariffs, would leave less to cut.
- Pairing rooftop solar with a home battery lets a household hold its own midday surplus until the evening.
- Treating curtailment as a paid grid service rather than an uncompensated loss would stop the whole cost falling on the generator.

- Inverter based resource
- A generator such as solar or wind that reaches the grid through power electronics, and so gives none of the rotating inertia that coal and hydro turbines do.
A coal or hydro turbine spins, and the weight of that spinning mass steadies the grid's frequency on its own. Solar and wind reach the grid through power electronics instead, so a grid leaning on them has less of that steadying to draw on.
- Solar and wind are inverter based resources, which give none of the rotating inertia a turbine does.
- That shows up as a lower short circuit ratio, a measure of grid strength, leaving voltage and frequency less stable.

Green Energy Corridor

- Evacuate
- In the power sector, to carry electricity away from where it is generated to where it is consumed.
Transmission is congested, so power from renewable rich States cannot reach the buyers who want it. The Green Energy Corridor is the programme that builds the lines to evacuate it, in intra-State and inter-State phases.
- The third phase of the intra-State corridor is in its final stages and has gone to the Union Cabinet for approval.
- The expected outlay is over ₹50,000 crore, and it would carry about 135 GW of renewable power out of the States that generate it.
- Right of way disputes and forest clearances have delayed the earlier phases, as have restrictions on overhead lines meant to protect the Great Indian Bustard.
