A share buyback is a company buying back its own shares from investors; in the open market route it buys them through the stock exchange.

What changed

  1. 19 Jun 2026Briefnewly addedIn June 2026 the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) brought back buybacks through the stock exchange route, which it had phased out. The change followed the Budget 2026-27, which moved the taxation of buybacks to capital gains. The board also set up GARUDA, a green channel that lets alternative investment funds start raising money 10 working days after filing a placement memorandum, instead of 30.
