Solid waste
India's municipal waste system is built to collect and process whatever a city throws out, and it breaks at the first step, in the household that does not separate its bin. In August 2026 the Supreme Court said so plainly: managing solid waste is a duty every generator shares, not the sanitary worker's alone, and it asked schools and District Collectors to make that duty felt.

- Prelims 2019: the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016
Who has to manage a city's waste
- Municipal solid waste is the urban local body's charge, and the daily work of collecting, carrying and sorting it falls on sanitary workers.
- The Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 place a duty on the generator as well, and not only on the local body: segregation at source is the generator's own job.
- Mixed waste cannot be unmixed at the far end, so what a household does with its bin decides how much of a city's waste can be composted or recycled at all.
