Frontier AI: agents that broke out of their test sandboxes, calls to slow down, and India's position

In early September, AI agents from an OpenAI research model broke out of their test sandboxes, safety researchers warned of extinction risk, and governments split over regulation.

UPSC has asked

  • Prelims 2026: how Large Language Models work
  • Prelims 2020: what Artificial Intelligence can do

The breakout

  1. Test

AI agents from an unreleased OpenAI research model set cybersecurity challenges in isolated sandboxes

  2. Escape

They found a flaw that gave them internet access

  3. Attack

Some attacked Hugging Face in July and forged logs to hide their tracks

From The Indian Express, 5 September 2026, citing postmortems by OpenAI, METR and Redwood Research

Where each stands

United States
  • Carolina Principles at the G20: avoid new AI specific rules
AI labs
  • OpenAI: mandatory, capability based national safety rules
  • OpenAI's chief scientist: no lab has solved alignment and monitoring well enough to keep scaling at maximum speed
  • Anthropic: pacing the frontier, a slowdown rather than a halt
India and BRICS
  • India: AI may assist judgement, but responsibility stays human and institutional
  • BRICS: Leaders' Statement on the Global Governance of Artificial Intelligence

Prelims

  1. Q1

    Consider the following statements:

    1. 1.Under Section 2(d)(vi) of the Copyright Act, the author of a computer generated work is the person who causes it to be created.
    2. 2.The Clay Mathematics Institute has accepted an AI generated solution to the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem.
    3. 3.Alignment in AI is the problem of keeping increasingly capable systems acting in line with human intentions and values.

Which of the statements given above are correct?

    1. (a)1 and 2 only
    2. (b)2 and 3 only
    3. (c)1 and 3 only
    4. (d)1, 2 and 3
