Deep sea mining: India's seabed contracts, crawler trials and the wait for the ISA's Exploitation Code

On 8 September the Ministry of Earth Sciences and NIOT invited private industry into deep sea mining, though commercial nodule mining in international waters must wait for the International Seabed Authority's Exploitation Code.

  • India is the first nation to hold two sulphide exploration contracts, one on the Carlsberg Ridge in the Arabian Sea.
  • The ₹4,077 crore Deep Ocean Mission funds the crawler trials and the Samudrayaan programme, whose Matsya6000 is designed to carry three people to 6,000 metres.

The concerns

  • Removing nodules destroys slow growing habitats that may take very long to recover.
  • Sediment plumes and noise can spread damage well beyond the mined site.

UN General Assembly backs equal-area world maps, naming Equal Earth as the alternative to Mercator

The UN General Assembly adopted Correct the Map, a resolution that is not binding, promoting world maps with continents at their true relative size. It names the 2018 Equal Earth projection as more accurate than the Mercator projection of 1569.

The vote

  • 164 in favour, including India, and only the United States against.
  • The African Union backs the campaign, which says Mercator made Africa look small.
  • India said the resolution authenticates no map and does not address boundaries.
  • India's territory, including Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, must be shown as in its official map.

No flat map is true

  • Every map projection distorts area, shape, distance or direction, and none keeps both shapes and areas true.

What each projection keeps

  • Keeps angles and local shapes
  • Rhumb lines are straight, so it suits navigation
  • Inflates areas more towards the poles
  • Greenland looks as big as Africa, which is 14 times larger
Equal Earth (equal-area)

Gujarat nears its MISHTI target, and a Mangrove GIS (MGIS) Portal will monitor its mangroves.

  • MISHTI (Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats & Tangible Incomes) was launched on World Environment Day 2023.
  • It aims to restore about 540 sq km of mangroves through MGNREGS and CAMPA convergence.
  • Avicennia marina dominates Gujarat's mangroves, mostly in the Gulf of Kachchh.

Geothermal energy: India's first geothermal wells at Puga Valley, Ladakh, and the national policy behind them

In July 2026 the ONGC Energy Centre commissioned India's first two geothermal wells at Puga Valley in Ladakh. They will evaluate the reservoir for India's first 1 MW demonstration geothermal power project.

The science

  1. Heat

    Radioactive decay of uranium, thorium and potassium, and heat left from the Earth's formation

  2. Reservoir

    Where faults let hot material rise, hot water and steam collect in permeable rock

  3. Power

    Wells bring it up to drive a turbine, with no fuel burnt

  4. Reinjection

    Used water is condensed and reinjected to replenish the reservoir

  • Unlike solar and wind, geothermal power is available round the clock.

The policy

  • The National Policy on Geothermal Energy of 2025, with MNRE as nodal ministry, covers exploration, direct use, ground source heat pumps and repurposing abandoned oil and gas wells.

Rapid erosion in the upper Indus basin releases more carbon dioxide than silicate weathering removes, study finds

A study finds that rapid erosion in the upper Indus basin releases about three times as much CO2 through pyrite oxidation as silicate weathering removes.

The textbook view

  • In silicate weathering, freshly exposed silicate minerals react with CO2, and the carbon ends up locked in seafloor sediments.
  • Silicate weathering is thought to have helped cool the planet over the last 50 million years.

    Glaciers and rapid erosion expose pyrite, an iron sulphide, to air and water

The news

  • The Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences, Lucknow, under the Department of Science and Technology, reconstructed about 25,000 years of the Indian Summer Monsoon from a Bakhira Lake sediment core.
  • Such long records from the Central Ganga Plain are scarce, and help separate natural monsoon variability from human induced change.

  • Bakhira, in Uttar Pradesh, is an oxbow wetland formed when the Rapti cut off a meander, and a Ramsar Site.
