Myanmar is the only member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that borders India, which makes it central to both Neighbourhood First and Act East.
- The two countries share a 1,643 km land border with Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram, and a maritime boundary in the Bay of Bengal.
- India's stakes are border security against insurgent groups and two connectivity projects: the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project through Sittwe port to Mizoram, and the India Myanmar Thailand Trilateral Highway.
- India has dealt with the military government since the 2021 coup, while sending humanitarian aid such as Operation Brahma after the 2025 earthquake.

- President Min Aung Hlaing made his first official visit to India since the 2021 coup, from 30 May to 3 June 2026.
- Myanmar assured India that its territory would not be used against India's security interests.
- The two sides discussed the Kaladan project and the Trilateral Highway, both delayed by the conflict in Myanmar, and critical minerals, of which Myanmar has large deposits in Kachin State.
- On 16 June Min Aung Hlaing began a visit to China, a reminder that India competes with China for influence in Myanmar.
Mains: Engaging Myanmar's military government serves India's border security and connectivity, but the conflict delays both projects and China competes for the same influence.
