The Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 makes the registration of every birth and death compulsory.
What changed
4 Aug 2026Briefnewly addedParliament passed the Amendment Bill: the Lok Sabha on 31 July and the Rajya Sabha on 4 August 2026. It amends Section 13(3) so that a birth or death reported more than two years late can be registered only on the order of a Judicial Magistrate of the First Class. Delays of one to two years stay with the District, Sub Divisional or Executive Magistrate.
