New Zealand is a Pacific democracy with a large Indian diaspora, long a minor partner of India.
- For decades the relationship stayed thin, held back by New Zealand's dairy export interests and its opposition to India's nuclear tests.
- The India and New Zealand Free Trade Agreement, signed on 27 April 2026, changed the relationship; its terms belong to Economy.

- On 10 and 11 July Prime Minister Modi made the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in about four decades.
- The two sides raised ties to a Strategic Partnership with a roadmap to 2030.
- The joint statement set a target of doubling two way trade in goods and services by 2030, created a maritime security dialogue and a mutual logistics support arrangement for the maritime domain, and set up a Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism.
Mains: A trade pact opened the way, but the Strategic Partnership puts New Zealand into India's Indo Pacific maritime network.
