The General Assembly elects five of the ten elected members of the Security Council each year, for terms of two years.
What changed
4 Jun 2026Briefnewly addedThe General Assembly elected Austria, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, Zimbabwe and Kyrgyzstan for 2027 and 2028. The five join Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latvia and Liberia among the ten elected members. It is Kyrgyzstan's first term since it joined the UN in 1992; the five replace Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia at the end of 2026.
