ओरंगुटान (orangutan) एशिया के एकमात्र बड़े कपि (great apes) हैं, और ये जंगल में केवल बोर्नियो और सुमात्रा में रहते हैं।
- भारत में इनका कोई जंगली क्षेत्र नहीं है, इसलिए यहाँ मिला कोई ओरंगुटान केवल बाहर से लाया गया हो सकता है, और यही ऐसे मामले को संरक्षण का नहीं बल्कि तस्करी का प्रश्न बनाता है।
- तीनों प्रजातियाँ, बोर्नियाई, सुमात्राई और तपानुली, IUCN रेड लिस्ट में गंभीर रूप से संकटग्रस्त और CITES परिशिष्ट I में हैं।
- वन्यजीव अपराध नियंत्रण ब्यूरो वह वैधानिक निकाय है जो तस्करी की जाँच करता है।

- ओरांगुटान की सभी प्रजातियाँ CITES के परिशिष्ट I में हैं, जिनका व्यापार केवल अपवाद स्वरूप होता है और वाणिज्य के लिए नहीं।
- ज़ब्त किए गए पशु के लिए पर्यावरण मंत्रालय मूल देश से परामर्श करता है; प्रत्यावर्तन उस देश के खर्च पर होता है, और अन्यथा पशु बचाव केंद्र में जाता है।
- वन्यजीव (संरक्षण) अधिनियम के 2022 के संशोधन ने CITES में सूचीबद्ध प्रजातियों की एक अनुसूची जोड़ी और यह इसी प्रक्रिया को अपनाता है।
