Global biodiversity conventions and bodies

The conventions and bodies that govern biodiversity, on trade in wildlife, migratory species, genetic resources and global targets. The International Whaling Commission (IWC) is the global body for managing whaling and conserving whales.

  • It was set up under the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling, signed at Washington in 1946.
  • India has been a member since 1981.

    • India cited Project Dolphin and named the Arabian Sea humpback whale among the species it has chosen for focused conservation.
