Venezuela holds about 17% of the world's proven crude reserves, and the overseas arm of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), ONGC Videsh Limited, has stakes in the San Cristóbal field and the Carabobo-1 block.
- Indian refiners bought Venezuelan crude heavily until US sanctions curbed the trade.
- In January 2026 US forces captured President Nicolás Maduro, and Delcy Rodríguez became Acting President.
- As Washington eased sanctions, Venezuelan crude returned to India in April 2026 after a gap of a year, and the closure of Hormuz made it more valuable.
