Kannada and Telugu were both accorded classical language status in 2008, so statements 2 and 3 are correct. Gujarati has not been declared a classical language, so statement 1 is incorrect. At the date of this paper the list ran to six languages: Tamil, recognised in 2004 and the first to be so designated, Sanskrit in 2005, Kannada and Telugu in 2008, Malayalam in 2013 and Odia in February 2014. The criteria then in use required high antiquity of early texts or recorded history over a period of one thousand five hundred to two thousand years, a body of ancient literature regarded as a valuable heritage by generations of speakers, an original literary tradition not borrowed from another speech community, and a classical language and literature distinct from its modern form. Gujarati fails the antiquity criterion, its literary tradition being traced to roughly the eleventh or twelfth century. The official answer is (c). The elimination route is that Kannada and Telugu were designated together and are almost always recalled as a pair, so a candidate who fixes that pair rules out (a) and (b) immediately and is left to decide only whether Gujarati belongs, which it does not.
