Contour bunding consists of building earthen embankments along the contour, that is, along a line of equal elevation across a slope, so that they intercept downslope runoff, hold it, allow it to infiltrate and prevent the concentration of flow that would otherwise cut rills and gullies. It is a practice for gently to moderately sloping cultivated land in low to medium rainfall areas, typically under about 600 millimetres, on permeable soils.
