Kharif crops are sown with the onset of the south west monsoon in June and July and harvested in September and October; they are the monsoon crops and are water demanding. Rabi crops are sown in October and November on residual soil moisture or under irrigation and harvested in March and April; they are the winter crops and require a cool growing season with a warm ripening period.
- Items 1, 2 and 3, cotton, groundnut and rice, are all sown with the monsoon and are kharif crops, rice being the archetype and cotton and groundnut both being long duration monsoon crops of the black and red soil tracts.
- Item 4, wheat, is the archetypal rabi crop of the north western plains, requiring a cool sowing season, and it is the single item that does not belong. The official answer (c) follows. The elimination route is wheat alone: recognising it as rabi removes options (a) and (d) immediately, and rice, which no candidate will place in rabi, removes option (b), so the question can be answered from the two crops every candidate knows. The complication worth mentioning in class is that rice is grown in all three seasons in parts of the east and south, the boro crop being a summer rice, but the kharif classification is the one the question intends.
