  • Statement 1 is correct and is the defining commercial problem of Indian coal. Because the Gondwana coals were formed by the drifting in of plant material into basins carrying large quantities of mineral matter, the ash is distributed through the coal substance itself rather than concentrated in partings, and run of mine ash typically runs from thirty five to fifty per cent. This intergrown mineral matter is also why Indian coal washes poorly.
  • Statement 2 is correct: sulphur content is generally low, commonly under one per cent in the Gondwana coals, which is a real advantage since it means lower sulphur dioxide emission per tonne burnt and it is one reason flue gas desulphurisation was long treated as a lower priority in Indian thermal plants than particulate control.
  • Statement 3 is incorrect and is the item on which the whole question turns. The ash of Indian coal is rich in alumina and silica and poor in the iron, calcium and alkali fluxes that lower the melting point, so the ash fusion temperature is high, generally above about 1400 degrees Celsius. That is favourable for boiler operation, since high fusion temperature reduces slagging and clinker formation on furnace walls, but it makes the ash abrasive and difficult in gasification and in some metallurgical uses. The official answer (a) follows. Elimination narrows the field but cannot close it: statements 1 and 2 are both secure to a prepared candidate, which removes options (b) and (c), after which the choice between (a) and (d) rests wholly on the ash fusion temperature.

Coalbed methane is adsorbed on the internal surfaces of the coal matrix and is released when reservoir pressure is lowered by dewatering; it is predominantly methane, typically above ninety per cent, but is not pure, carrying carbon dioxide, nitrogen and traces of heavier hydrocarbons. Shale gas is not a mixture of propane and butane. It is natural gas generated and retained within a fine-grained organic-rich source rock, and it too is predominantly methane, which is why it is produced into the same gas infrastructure. The examiner has attached a false composition to shale gas to see whether the candidate treats the two as chemically different resources when in fact they differ in the rock that holds the gas and the technique needed to release it, not in what the gas is.
  • Statement 2 is incorrect. Shale gas resources had been identified in India well before this paper, the prospective basins being Cambay, Krishna-Godavari, Cauvery, Damodar Valley, Assam-Arakan, Vindhyan and Rajasthan, and ONGC had drilled an assessment well in the Damodar Valley in West Bengal in 2011. Both statements failing, the official answer is (d).
  • Statement 1 carries the elimination on its own, since the description of shale gas as propane and butane only is chemically wrong on any account and its rejection removes (a) and (c), leaving statement 2 to decide between (b) and (d).

The geological reason is the same in each case: these are basins with thick, organically rich, thermally mature shale sequences, and the same source rocks that charged the conventional oil and gas accumulations for which Cambay and Krishna-Godavari are known also retain gas within the shale itself. The elimination route is the geological principle rather than a memorised list: shale gas occurs in the source rock, so any basin that has yielded conventional hydrocarbons necessarily has a mature source shale, and all three named basins are established conventional producers.
