- Statement 1 is correct and is the defining commercial problem of Indian coal. Because the Gondwana coals were formed by the drifting in of plant material into basins carrying large quantities of mineral matter, the ash is distributed through the coal substance itself rather than concentrated in partings, and run of mine ash typically runs from thirty five to fifty per cent. This intergrown mineral matter is also why Indian coal washes poorly.
- Statement 2 is correct: sulphur content is generally low, commonly under one per cent in the Gondwana coals, which is a real advantage since it means lower sulphur dioxide emission per tonne burnt and it is one reason flue gas desulphurisation was long treated as a lower priority in Indian thermal plants than particulate control.
